Actually, I was wondering about that myself.

Both could denote a belief in a higher power in some way. Although I have to admit that in my narrow mindedness, I always associated spirituality with mysticism – my little brains couldn’t handle that.

What is exactly the difference between being spiritual and being religious?

Was wondering what would happen if “devil worshipper” was ever included as an option in the “religion” section.

As I see it and very very simplified (from my very limited knowledge of all religions) and please don't all jump down my throat it's a very difficult thing to explain without generalising and I don't wish to hurt or upset anyone.

Spiritual: believe in some form of "Higher" Devine Source or Power. Be it God or just an energy. It stands for all that is good and that is love in its purest form. Spiritual people tend to have higher awareness of "energies" generally. They can sense and sometimes see and feel things that the "average" person cannot. One could never advocate any form of "aggressive" act in the name of spirituality. It would be contrary to everything that it stands for, the attainment of enlightenment and unconditional love.

Religious: believes in some form of (may be) "man made" religion like Protestanism - which was invented by Henry VIII so that he could divorce his wives without needing to be-head them (I guess it must have got boring after a while) not withstanding all those hours he must have spent kneeling down in confession at the local Catholic Church saying "Ave Marias" so that he could be forgiven for his sins hahahaha! Anyway he got bored with all that so he invented Protestanism.
As far as I have experienced Catholicism is also a man made religion, I feel used many times as a "crowd control" tool including many attrocities and devastation. Those are but 2 examples of "man made religions". They usually advocate that one should attend a place of worship and they are also usually very mandatory as to the form of worship. They also advocate that "God" (who is usually male) would turn his back on anyone who has commited a "sin".
This is a very generalised description as Buddhism for instance does not fall into that category :-)

I think you are right on target in defining the difference between religious and spiritual as you have done. Religion has indeed to do with being faithful to a certain credo and while spiritual is 'being' something..like feeling our humanity more fully, of being lifted momentarily beyond ourselves. I think empathy and compassion is the stuff of the spiritual being.

Btw Buddha was totally indifferent to the theological beliefs of his followers. Buddhism as a religion and Buddha as a god came later long after him - a most man-made thing as you put it.

Someone who believes in a particular faith but does not practise it is usually described as a "non practising + name of religion" I think

I say of myself that I am spiritual and one thing I am very sure of is :
"I am very sure why" and I practise daily (healing prayer, meditation/quiet time to reflect and connect with beautiful energies)
I am also very sure that I am not religious as I was brought a catholic and I no longer practise that religion or support it's teachings. Mostly because I don't agree with it's history of violence or it's "narrow minded" and dictatorial approach to "life". God is surely a lot "Grander" than that.

Well.... I am VERY religious!... I religiously brush my teeth every morning and every night before going to bed. I religiously bath every day. I religiously take my excercise 3 times a week, do my sit-ups, bench-presses, weight-lifting, kick-boxing, Tai`chi and karate excercises VERY RELIGIOUSLY.

However, when it comes to being Spiritual.... I sit on my bum in my backyard late at night, smoke my pipe, gaze at the stars, and just generally commune with my God, have arguments with Him, complain to Him, thank Him for things sent my way, and ponder on the Bigger Picture of Life.

What people here call being religious...?... what?... going to a church, being labelled with a Doctrinal Belief System, ensuring a well attended funeral? ... for some people seem to need this to have acdeptance amongst their peers. Most people do it because they were taught it was the right thing to do. Others do it because they think its the right thing to do. And others do it to get elected to certain positions in their politial or social life.

If people took the time to read the New Testament of the old Holy Bible, they would find that it has absolutely nothing in common with what is classed as Religion today. It teaches a Morality of Human Decency.... No matter how it may have been twisted out of shape over the centuries, being the Living Word of God, it still contains a basic message to those who would seek the Truth.dancing cheers

When it comes to religion I am not concerned with its past. I am concerened with what it teaches at present.

Smoky:

"However, when it comes to being Spiritual.... I sit on my bum in my backyard late at night, smoke my pipe, gaze at the stars, and just generally commune with my God, have arguments with Him, complain to Him, thank Him for things sent my way, and ponder on the Bigger Picture of Life."

And that is better than some canting hypocrites who stumble to find the first pew and take pains to appear to be pious and devout.

If you believe in God or anything that is spiritual, it will reach you wherever you may be...as long as your mind is open to it.

By the way, I have discovered that being open minded does not mean having a hole in your head.

" Better to swear and mean no harm than it is to pray and mean no good"

I don't have to talk...I just have to listen.

I think the neighbors are more annoyed with my revving the bike up at 6.00am on Sundays.
