...and why? It's a common phenomenon that every country teaches it's citizens history that varies (from place to place). So is there a common history?

Nope...it's mainly objective, but in the passing of time becomes more subjective after sensitivities soften somewhat.

We Brits are now more aware than ever that our history is much less glorious than previously thought. In all honesty, 'we' were nothing more than gentlemen vagabonds for the majority of the 1600 and 1700's. Bullies 'we' were...

I feel that it's as subjective as its protagonists, adding time, folklore, etc. Human behavior and motivation is super enigmatic, because one can easily misinterpret others' motivations. It is not easy to know the why of things.
