For those of us females finding ourselves alone on Valentines day, some tips
PAMPER yourself! For most of us women we find a little pampering makes us feel better. No need to go overboard. Put a little money aside, buy yourself something that makes you feel beautiful. And if you can afford the expense go to one of those salons that offer Glamour Shots and have a portrait made. That can be loads of fun and it makes u feel great.
For chocolate lovers here is a very simple recipe on how to make chocolate covered strawberries. If you know how to boil water then you can probably make this:
What equipment you need beforehand
DOUBLE BOILER-use to melt chocolate Can be found at most Kitchen utensil stores, I think Target carries them
25-50/qty RED/PINK "FRIZZLE" TOOTHPICKS To insert into strawberries so they can be easily put into melted chocolate w/o getting chocolate on yr fingers.
LG BLOCK OF STYROFOAM-in most craft stores To insert the end of the toothpick in when strawberries are covered with the melted chocolate and can dry standing upright on the toothpick.
25-50/QTY PKG RED/PINK CANDY FOIL CUPS-To place the dried chocolate covered strawberries in sideways
LG COOKIE SHEET-or better, one of those cheap cookiesheet tins especially the kind that comes with a plastic cover so there are no "accidents" of strawberries falling out.
ROLL OF WAXED PAPER-To line the cookie sheet tin to keep any excess chocolate that drips over the foil cups from sticking the entire cup to the cookie sheet, DONT USE PAM SPRAY
25-50/RED/PINK SMALL PAPER PLATES
25-50/RED.PINK SMALL SQUARE NAPKINS
INGREDIENTS: 1-1/2 POUNDS OF SEMI-SWEET CHOCOLATE CHIPS-I find "chips" are easier to melt than whole bars
3 TABLESPOONS CRISCO SHORTENING-IMPORTANT NOT TO USE OIL, MARGARINE OR BUTTER) It comes in a can unrefrigerated usually in the supermarkets baking section.
1-1/2 POUNDS FRESH STRAWBERRIES WITH LEAVES WASHED/DRIED
DIRECTIONS:
Insert toothpicks into the leafy tops of each strawberry "frizzle" end outwards and place aside on a clean surface
In the double boiler-following the directions on the double boiler where to add the water on the bottom part of it, mix the chocolate chips and the shortening over a low flame. Melt the chocolate and shortening stirring occasionally just enough until it's smooth being careful not to burn the chocolate. Turn off the heat
Holding the frizzle end of the toothpick and the strawberry attached on the bottom, dip the strawberry into the chocolate mixture.
Turn the strawberry upside down and insert the frizzle end of the toothpick into styrofoam for the chocolate to cool.
Repeat ea strawberry
If you find the chocolate is getting too "hard" in the boiler, turn flame on low again for a minute to reheat chocolate.
Using the tin cookie sheet line the candy foil cups on top of the waxed paper, using a teaspoon dab a little of the melted chocolate in one cup then IMMEDIATELY put a chocolate covered strawberry sideways on top so it fits nicely with the frizzle part sticking sideways out.
THEN AFTERWARDS... Try to go out that night with SINGLE friends. (no couples, too depressing) Most regular night clubs or restaurants are probably booked up with reservations by now, but if you look in the paper, you might be able to find a "County" related social event that doesn't charge an admission fee, or charges very little and no need to make a reservation. Or check one of those "County brochures" you may get in the mail. Some even offer events on Valentines Day for only singles.. so you never know who you can meet. And if you can't find a single friend or friends to go with... gather up the nerver and go by yourself. Bringing a tray of those chocolate covered strawberries will probably attract some "new" friends around you. What could you lose? If you don't like it, just go home..
This may sound corny, but my four sons are my Valentines. They love me unconditionaly and I get happiness from giving them a V day present. Its not always about receiving.
And the next time you slide up to a bar, you'll notice the large jar at the end labeled "Beer Nuts"; betch never look at them the same way again....LOL!! Ouch!! ouuu, you slap nice..:D (sorry, just could not let that go..:))
It IS a great recipe... and soooo simple. I gots lots of compliments when I made them. Doesn't cost much either.. The most expensive of everything is a stainless steel double boiler which is about $20.00. The rest of the stuff you can find (besides the chips, shortening, etc) like the paper goods, tins.. etc you can pick up at a "Dollar" store . And as for the kids, it's a great way to get them to eat fruit... ! You can use orange slices, pineapple slices.. whatever you think of. They also have "peanut butter" flavored chips.. you can cover apple slices.. whatever. My kid loves that.
Hmm, as for guys... I don't know how I can relate... being a woman, I know how WE feel about it.. sooo just to make you feel a little better.. look in yr "Flower" box...
i have found my valentine ! her name is dan and shes asked me today if i would be hers and i said forever and she hugged me . shes 8 and shes my sweet baby girl. then i thought of this thread, shes so sweet my girl.
oh wow I was just thinking about that the other day. The part in your post where you was talking about going to glamour shots? I have always wanted to do that. Me and one of my best friends talked about doing that the other day. Just going out to the mall and having our make up done and pictures taken. WOW I think I mat still do that. awesome post thanks for the pick me up!
