I agree cruises are the go. That way I visited Malta. 
what a way to arrive, with that fortified landmass ahead ... I felt like a cruisadress!
Was invited to a cruise in 2000. Put it off and off, coz I didnt like the ferries to GB. Finally gave in ... leaving Naples, or was it Genoa? stopped so we could see Pompeji .... couldnt buy any souveniers, as at home I had identical souveniers my mother had bought in 1948 on my bookshelf. What an investment.
Then on to Malta, Tunisia (loo's
) but pretty bazars then on to Malorca, where I got off as I had to be home the next day for the arrivlof my father coming from Oz.
Waved the ship going on to Barcelona good-bye as well as my house keys, which I had left within my partners suitcase who was still on board.
Entered my flat , at 2.00 am and 150 Euros later (lock-smiths take your last shirt off of you).

My bestest friend (female type) is visiting me here for a week......the Maltese guys are probably too scared to ask her out (she's a very attractive woman), but I'm trying to arrange a surprise party for her.........
