Holocaust Museum, Washington, DC: Thou shalt not be a victim. Thou shalt not be a perpetrator. Above all, thou shalt not be a bystander.
Maya Angelou: History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.
Pearl S. Buck: We send missionaries to China so the Chinese can get to heaven, but we won't let them into our country.
Marian Wright Edelman: You just need to be a flea against injustice. Enough committed fleas biting strategically can make even the biggest dog uncomfortable and transform even the biggest nation.
I find it amazing that humanity has such high ideals for itself...and such a short and selective memory. I'm sure we could all relate a time when we acted injudiciously against another, but such individual injustices receive the attention of a jay-walking ticket in comparison to huge, media fueled "injustices" around the world.
Justice is like charity. It begins at home. Teach our children to be fighters for daily justice in the world they can act in, and soon enough the larger injustices would disappear. God, the idea of personal responsibility...its just so foreign.
We now live in a world where we are told by one of the most powerful politicians in the world
"If you are not with us you are against us"
despite the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and formal recognition by the laws of most nations including The United States with the first ammendment in The Bill of Rights.
I consider that the considered and reasonable voicing of individual opinions in society is essential in dealing with any injustice, to create awareness and foster sane thinking.
