all i know is theres been some kind of mass exodus, or removals

The reason I hide my profile when I take a break is something I learned from another member: no one can email you so you don't come back to an overstuffed mailbox that you have to plough through.
Mastic has hidden his in the past. If someone turns their profile off any mail they sent to you stays in your mailbox with a 'profile unavailable' next to it until they return.
If they are booted or cancel their profile, their mail disappears from your mailbox completely.
