It's happened again another bus accident, Greyhound slide off the road - three dead - other injured. Recently there have been school bus accident, one in Calgary where a child died.

Should there be seatbelts in buses, school buses, city buses,, greyhounds, tour buses?

Should this be enforced (who is responsible for enforcing)
Do you believe that wearing your seatbelt in your own vehicle should be an option or manditory?

Good question and one I have thought of often over the years...why don't they have seatbelts in those things?
I think their installation should be mandatory, but the use optional. I think its all about safety and encourage anyone to use them, but they should be provided and the decision left to the passenger.

This has been a matter of debate for quite some time. The big problem is that in most of these buses, especially schoolbuses, a "lap-belt" only system would probably be adopted - and lap belts by themselves, especially with children, have a tendency to cause a lot of internal injuries in the lower abdomenal cavity. It would require a major re-design of seats in buses to supply both lap and shoulder restraint style belts,....but in major roll-overs, a lap belt would probably be better than nothing.

I agree that school buses should have some form of safety belt....have you ever seen the videos where the kids go flying through the air?
I would also agree to having them on the greyhounds and tour buses but it wouldn't be practical on the city buses given the flow of passengers.

I probably don't know much on the subject to comment ....but

I thought they had seatbelts in the smaller buses?

I don't agree that because lap belts are known to cause abdominal injuries in children is reason to abort the idea of any type of safety restraints at all. Nore do I agree with the fact the re-design, or financial concerns should stand in the way of ensuring safety, especially in school buses.

All I've ever thought on this issue is that the bigger buses carry alot more people. In the event of being submerged or in the case of fire, panic is likely, and escape could be difficult, especially for younger children. There is only one driver to ensure the escape of the passengers.

I think there is enough technology today to outfit buses with safety restraints, and that wearing them in buses should be mandatory. Your body flying through the bus could put others in danger.

Provincial governments should create the momentum for other provinces to follow, in the design and enforcement for the installation of safety on buses, especially school buses. I think that school buses should be one of the safest vehicles on the road.

Easier said than done, I know. But something DOES need to be done.

I don't agree that wearing seatbelts in personal vehicles should be mandatory.

Cell phones while driving though, GEEEEZ!! I've seen people completely out to lunch on the road while yapping on their phones. blah
