Maybe the person does not know what to say,or does not want to talk about themselves, so telling a joke is a nice way of responding.

I was not talking about me at all, some friends mention about after a email or 2 they exchange email adress, but then no more communication between them, but only jokes and more jokes.

It;s happened to me and sometimes, I AM the one that just sends a few jokes but no personal emails.......
It can be various reasons...
one, I haven't got the time to sit down and write to that person at that time
2) sending a joke just means that I thought it was funny and thought I would share the fun or
3) I have written, no response from the other person and so, I just keep it as an email friend
besides the few personal reasons I just gave, I know no other reason

You receive a couple of emails, you reply then asked for your email to continue to get to know each other
After u send email, you receive emails but the emails are "jokes one after another"
