Pudmuddle: This is the very innate, contensious nature of religion. It is primarily about 'winning' , having the numbers to defeat the opponent who is just as subjective as religion itself is.

Your statement is completely erroneous. The assumption that no one will benefit from discussion is not supported by any facts, much less wisdom. In fact the opposite is true, quite factually.

I can point out a number of people here who were once on the reigious maerry-go-round (myself included) and found the truth by reading and particpating in such discussions. So, while you may intend to be closed minded yourself and unwilling to "lose" ( your venacular), there are many people who come by truth, by way of these, as you characterize them 'arguements'

Religions are losing their footing every day, as people become "spiritual; but, not religious" so your very narrow view on what's really going on in the world is as closed minded as your religious views expect and want you to be. The closed minded dogmatic, misinformation of religion lives in your attitude... and is completely without factual basis from stem to stern.
On the contrary, my eyes are wide open along with my heart. I take everything into consideration including theories, but theories are inconclusive without fact. You speak of your "truth" yet provide no facts - you have yet to prove God does not exist. You may misconstrue my statement to suite your needs or desires as you wish. Please, continue, you are quite entertaining.

I have done everything you have accused me of not doing here. You can read cognitively I trust? otherwsie all you're doing is firing back some more unsubstantiated tripe for the purpose of yet again wanting to "win" an arguement.

Please read my posts, you will find all the answers you say I have not given you...open your mind! dont just give me lip service and anecdotal oppostion. cool

emannigol: Perhaps they didn't want to save all their scribbles for later generations.

However, invention of writing seems to be a sort of side product from large enough economy. If I remember correctly it's been individually invented three times; Mesopotamia, China and Mesoamerica.

hmmm you could one or two up on me in the knowledge dep't. there. Haven't researched back as far in those cultures, aside from the some of the Mayan stuff that is flooding the web now.

Just made me think, how christian-centric we are even in our historical assumptions, as if our entire historical make is only found in the christ center of the world ... Going to have to rethink this BS laugh

Sumerians invented writing in mesopotamian region, and pretty much at the same time Chinese invented writing too; they weren't Chinese at that time though. Somewhat later it was invented again in Mesoamerica by Mayas or Olmecs or who ever invented it first. It might have been individually invented some more times, but evidence isn't conclusive, because candidates have been thought living under the influence of these earlier mentioned larger cultures.

Quite interesting thing is that all these civilications lived just north of Tropic of Cancer. Couple of thousands years later this latitude of "blooming civilications" moved more north; Europe, Mongolia and North America.

diogenes:

Any true philologist knows that it's an English adaptation of the Latin conscientia. Con in latin is "with", not against. With knowledge...not necessarily scientific knowledge either.

thumbs up

I've read french etymology and greek as well. No dispute here. It is not so odd that the contrary nature is evident on the word, conscience, etymology or not ... and in time all appears as it should, no matter what it's derivations.

You have just validated my point, thank you.
I have read each and every one of your posts from beginning to now. While you have made some very good points, still, it leaves me plenty of room to see the bigger picture. There is a lot more to our existence, the universe and beyond than just text book theories.

Now I will leave you with something to ponder...

If you are right in saying there is NO God, no Satan, Heaven and Hell, then when we die, NONE of us have absolutely anything to worry about.

But if I am right, that there IS a God, Satan, Heaven and Hell, then you have some serious problems ahead.

Either way, I have nothing to lose. Think about it.

My father in law gives the same argument. You can almost see the steam coming out of peoples ears when it sinks in.

If you had read and fully understood you would realise that there is nothing beyond infinity, yet you use words that imply such things. Infinity is ALL encompassing, there can be nothing outside an all encompassing infinity.

It is more than clear that you do not fully comprehend not only what am saying, but also what infinity is.

As well, without brain cells functioning properly you do not have consciousness, hence do not know of existence, just as you were nothing before you had brain cells, you will be nothing when they die off... and the energy that fueled your brain will be used elsewhere, quite unaware of who you were.

You can stop worrying about the after life because there isn't one. You might want to take a big step now and do something worthwhile with your present life; because, now is the only time you have. There are plenty of serious problems in the here and now, without this phony heaven- hell, reward- fear system. This is your problem.

And it is not a problem you can project onto people who see through its delusional walls. It doesn't scare anyone who is aware of the truth.

Trust me, I do not worry at all. I know the difference between text books and reality, but as I had suspected, you would reply with such as you did. Once again, you have confirmed what I stated in a previous post.

You will not convince me nor will I you. Stalemate.

something to ponder? What you propose pondering is simply Pascal's Wager and has been successfully refuted on these forums and in theistic debate many times over - the argument supposes only two conclusions and gives the lie to claims of benevolence on the part of said assumed God - think about it.........

If you are right then there is still no problem, after all God is all forgiving, loving, compassionate and welcoming (allegedly) is he not ....dunno

I believe you are correct. However, I also believe God gave us a choice and we can do with that as we please. This is my belief and I do not expect anyone to accept it.

To borrow a little from Neil Peart's ingeniously thought out lyrics;

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.

I am aware that the song "Freewill" is controversial, but the highlighted/bold section holds a lot of meaning to my belief.

Below is an excerpt from an article that was written by a former athiest.

If a person opposes even the possibility of there being a God, then any evidence can be rationalized or explained away. It is like if someone refuses to believe that people have walked on the moon, then no amount of information is going to change their thinking. Photographs of astronauts walking on the moon, interviews with the astronauts, moon rocks...all the evidence would be worthless, because the person has already concluded that people cannot go to the moon.

That makes perfect sense after reading some of the responses I have seen in this thread, as well as many others. Here is the link if you wish to read the complete article;
