the waiter took the $5 so they had in effect only paid $25. he kept $2, which made it 27, and they each got 1 back(3) which makes it 30- it's just that you are calculating it backwards instead of forwards

Scottishlass: Just got this email,
3 Men go to a motel.
The man behind the desk says the room is $30.00
So each man pays $10.00 & they go to their room.
A while later the man behind the desk realised the room was only $25.00.
So he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys' room with $5.00
On the way, the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5.00 evenly between the 3 men, so he gave each man $1.00 & kept the other $2.00 for himself.
This meant that the 3 men each paid $9.00 for the room, which comes to a total of $27.00, add the $ 2.00 the bellboy kept & that comes to $29.00WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?
They haven't paid $9 each, they've paid $8.33 each that's where the $1 is.

if you work it this way they paid $28 dollars for the room and the bell boy got $2 = $ 30 not 29
as follows ... $25 for the room Bell boy gave them $3 ( 1 each) = 28 Bell boy kept $ 2 - $ 30
