muppetkiller: Very rare glimpses of the "real" me are observed. My daughter has the best understanding of what lies below. She's refinishing some pieces and asked for my help. I've got a bed that was abused and a piece shattered. It left two jagged holes. I finally decided it was better to trim the jagged ends, fill the holes slowly, carefully and match up the new to the existing design in order to preserve the beauty of the original. I never could figure out how to put all the pieces together.
It's a gorgeous carved bed with turned poles, scroll work and it's very intricate. It took me 5 years to tackle the project. I've had the supplies for two years, but I lacked faith in my abilities. Even if it doesn't turn out perfect, it makes me happy to make the repairs and invest the time.
The family prefers the shellacked, gleaming product. As long as they can see themselves in a mirror finish, they're happy. My mother said I should just get rid of it quickly, then forget it. I'm not the type to discard beauty because it has a couple of flaws. I'd rather spend some time and effort on a great thing and keep it.
Pat, you picked one helluva an analogy and came pretty close, as usual.
I know what needs to be done and I've been doing the work. It's a slow go, 'cause I'm scared, but it already looks better.
Has anyone told you, "You're a genius!", lately?

Progress, not perfection.
