I now see why they have a reputation as ruthless. And cynincal. Heck, they may as well be Republicans. They set up a 'protest application office' and anyone who applied dissappeared.
They made no bones that the first little girl who was supposed to sing at the opening ceremony wasn't cute enough. And they didn't seem at all conecrned that their gymnists were underaged.
They're seem like the kind of people who would lie their country into a war.
The China Olympics were a great event - there's no arguing with that. And we'll see what the Para-Olympics will be like to get to a full assessment of how China faired. However, I do think that - as the person above mentioned - that Chinese chose to replace the girl singing in the opening by another 'cuter' girl and use the voice of the other girl (as she was a better singer) and make the new girl look as if she's singing.
I think this can be used as a metaphor for Chinese politics and human rights record. On the outside, all seems fine and that the (all) Chinese are happy with the way the country is going but on the other we are made to forget:
1. China's single child per family policy which has been responsible for the abortions of millions of girls and disabled people who are deemed as inferior to healthy boys.
2. The crushing of anyone who in some way differs from the views of the main political line of thought by the government. Torture and murder have been used.
3. The censorship of global communication and monitoring of the internet in China to prevent the influx of information which might put the government in a bad light.
Those are just a few examples. May I remind you of Tibet and, much earlier in history, the murder of the student protesting in Tianamen square.
No, it'll take some more than a big firework display and a cunning exercise in PR to convince me that the Chinese government has changed. That is my two Yuans worth of wisdom ...

Same Difference!! Btw,some posters, unhappy with their Country ought to spend about 6 months as a Chinese Farmer,Miner or Factory-Worker. Great Attitude-Adjustment I've been told!!!!
Tom Friedman wrote a piece yesterday about what China has been doing since they won the the olympic bid in 2001 compared to what we've done during the same seven years. It's disgraceful. We better start teaching our kids to speak Mandarin.
