Proof of a man drought
Georgia Waters | August 26, 2008
It's a fact: it was easier for your mother to find a man in the 1970s than it is for you in the noughties.
In Man Drought and Other Social Issues of the New Century, Australia's most famous demographer, Bernard Salt reveals that in 1976, Australia had 54,000 more 30-something men than women, but by 2006 there was a shortfall of 9,000 men in the same age group.
"Baby Boomer women pairing up in the 1970s had it easy," Mr Salt said.
"There were more men than women due to a post-war immigration program that favoured men."
Mr Salt said today's man drought was partly due to the fact that Aussie blokes were now more likely to move overseas for work.
"This means that the odds for an Australian woman of finding a partner have altered over the course of a generation," he said.
"There is simply less product for 30-something women in particular to choose from."
