Relocating to the UK in 09 (2)

Hi all!

I am moving to York later this year, for work. It's a great opportunity for me and I am lucky to get this offer in the current financial crisis - so yey for that!!

But I don't really know anyone in the area, except th girls I've met at the office already. They're all nice, but I was hoping for a little bigger social circle than just my new colleagues. Nor do I know much about the area for that matter; what to do, where to go for fun, what's a decent gym, where to meet people, where the good coffee is, or where all the good, cute and single guys hang out.

Also, what is the market price for a decent 1 bed apt in/around York? Preferably unfurnished, so I can bring all my crap over as opposed to renting storage space here in Oslo. Anyone know a good website/realtor to contact for renting?
I am trying to avoid staying in hotels and/or B&Bs when I come over... Did that when I moved to Ireland years ago, so that's not really an option - if I can avoid it. Also, is house sharing the norm, or is it like here where people rent on their own?

I am looking for any and all input on what I need to do to get a smooth start once I get over, even though it's still a few months away. :) Early planning should help - I hope.
