RE: skean dbhu

skean dubh

pronounced (Skeen' Doo), can also be spelt dhu, can be translated as a 'black knife', was a weapon originally hidden in the folds of the tartan. These days it is usually worn inserted in the top of the right kilt hose ( sock ) as a part of the Scottish outfit.

Festivals and Events

Up Helly Aa ( Lerwick / Shetland )

Tuesday 27th January 2009

For 24 hours, on the last Tuesday of January, the town of Lerwick goes more than a little mad.

"There will be no postponement for weather". That's a defiant boast by Shetland's biggest fire festival, considering it's held in mid-winter on the same latitude as southern Greenland. But it's true: gales, sleet and snow have never yet stopped the Up Helly Aa guizers of Lerwick from burning their Viking galley - and then dancing the dawn away.........

Haggis our national dish.

Traditionally served with mashed potato and turnip ( neeps and tatties ) and a wee glass of whisky, especially on Burns night.

Haggis is a dish containing sheep's 'pluck' (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal's stomach for approximately three hours.

Haggis somewhat resembles stuffed intestines (pig intestines otherwise known as chitterlings), sausages and savoury puddings of which it is among the largest types. As the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique puts it, "Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour".

Most modern commercial haggis is prepared in a casing rather than an actual stomach. There are also meat-free recipes for vegetarians.

The haggis is a traditional Scottish dish memorialised as the national dish of Scotland by Robert Burns' poem Address to a Haggis in 1787. Haggis is traditionally served with "neeps and tatties" (Scots: swede, yellow turnip or rutabaga and potatoes, boiled and mashed separately) and a "dram" (i.e. a glass of Scotch whisky), especially as the main course of a Burns supper. However it is also often eaten with other accompaniments, or served with a whisky-based sauce.

Famous Scots

Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796)

(also known as Rabbie Burns, Scotland's favourite son, the Ploughman Poet, the Bard of Ayrshire and in Scotland as simply The Bard) was a Scottish poet and a lyricist.

Burns Supper

A Burns supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns, author of many Scots poems. The suppers are normally held on or near the poet's birthday, 25 January, sometimes also known as Robert Burns Day or Burns Night (Burns Nicht), although they may in principle be held at any time of the year........

Tomorrow many thousands of Scots world wide will be celebrating this day by raising a glass or two of whisky, consuming Haggis and listening to recitals of Burns's poems and songs.

Thanks for your reply, RDM! I know the Shaws came over one week after the Mayflower & founded the town of Little Compton, R.I. But I cant find where, in the U.K., they originated from. I know that George Shaws grandfather moved his family from England to Dublin & that most Shaws lived in Northern England, near, or across the Scottish border. A cluster also in the London area.
My great-grandmother was a Shaw, born in Boston, but later moved to the midwest. There are still many Shaws in Boston, but since I dont know any of them, I can't write to ask questions.
One of my Shaw relatives bought a nice piece of Martha's Vineyard that has been in our family since the 1860's.

Thats interesting you're related to Wordsworth & that he was of Scottish decent. I've learned a lot about Scottish history, as I read several books tae research for my newest novel. I also have learned quite a bit fae my friends in Glasgow.

Thanks too for joining my Michael Jackson Group (which I moved to "Fan Clubs') & posting a comment. I was accused on my forum for being "deluded & infatuated by his song & dance." Nothing could be farther fae the truth! I look beyond the outward & see peoples souls; & Mike's was one of the loneliest I've ever known...

RE: New Member

Hello GS, thanks for dropping by. I need to put some more effort into boosting the info here on this group thing I have kicked off . Had hoped others would have contributed but it's been very minor so far, I will try and make the effort again soon.

I don't know anything about the family name of Shaw, but should I come across it I will post here what I find. Have you done any research on it yourself ?

I am related to Wordsworth ( honest ) but I can't write for toffee !

Hi!

I was interested in this group cos my ancestors were the SHAWs & I'm very interested in learning more about my heritage. So, if anyone knows anything about Shaws, please feel free to email any info!

I doubt I can contribute much, but would LOVE to learn! I've made several Scottish friends on the internet & have learned much from them & I love their cheeky sense of humor & they understand mine as well. Would love to make more Scottish friends.

I'm a relative of the playwright George Bernard Shaw. Guess thats where I got my own writing genes from.

Thank you, RIO. teddybear
