Everything seems to be a bit early this year.. I am in southern Ontario.. and came back from Florida to find everything in bloom at once.. it is usually not until after the forsynthia is finished, that the apples cherry trees and crab apples come into bloom.. and then usually around mother's day the lilacs.. but they have been in bloom for at least a week now..
85% were i live is an old home place there was some little running roses here when my dad bought this place the flower gets about big as a golf ball yhey are so pretty the color is pinkish red then i have a regular rose garden
This scraggy bush was once, it looks like, much bigger, but the main trunk was sawn off, same applies to the medlar. I think when I moved in the builder crew did some felling to get their vehicle in.
Actually I have 3 lilacs on my property, as I've now discovered. But there are other varieties in the surrounding countryside that are slightly lighter and more lavender in hue, and I plan, when I find the time, if that ever happens, to arm myself with my trusty pointed spade and help myself to a few cuttings!
I'm no expert on plants (except on veg maybe..), but I seem to remember they like sun.. but that is all relative to local climate. I live in a temperate climate and it grows well here, almost like a weed, but it needs a sunny spot. I have also potted starters for friends and they never liked the pots, suggesting they dont want too much drainage..
My neighbor (a professional grounds keeper) tells me it blooms more abundant if you trim out old wood every couple of years.. But mine is so large, I also like to see the old wood, so I havent trimmed so far..
