How do I begin to explain where we have been?
How can I open the door and let you walk in.
From free men to slaves across the waters,
They took us from our homes to sell our sons and daughters.

They shackled our feet, but could not contain our minds,
We tasted defeat, but it would only be a matter of time.
They broke our bodies searching for control,
We faced adversity but kept our souls.
We come…

How do I begin to express what’s inside of me?
About the struggle of those who created our history.
I stand in awe of a past that’s withstood the test of time,
It beats proudly in my breast and enlightening my mind.

They saw our existence as chattel, property and slaves
Worked from the womb down trodden to our graves.
They wanted a conquerable race but they would see,
That we would rise to create our own destiny.
We come…

To the men and women who saw adversity,
As a stepping-stone to achieve liberty.
Though many have suffered and died,
And too many tears have been cried.
I stand before you today a woman, who is black,
And I make no apology for being just that.
I am not ashamed of the color of my skin,
For I am the door through which the past walks in.
I am no longer afraid to simply be,
For the price has been paid, and now I am free.
