The smell of Autumn

The cold autumn breeze blows the rustling leaves.
The smell of wood smoke lofting on the breeze.
The crisp of the cold chills you to the bone.
The candle flickers in jack'O lantern at your neighbors home.

Thoughts of a bygone summer fill your mind.
A true love that left you behind.
The emptiness you feel makes it all so bleak.
Then the cold brings you back as it wisps your cheek.

Its time to go now and head back home.
Its a long cold walk down a lonely road.
The crunch of leaves beneath your feet.
They tap and rattle as they blow in the street.

You close the door and remove your scarf.
To warm yourself at an empty hearth.
You sit to eat a warmed over meal.
Its unbelievable how empty you feel.

You lay down in a cold and empty bed.
You toss and turn to try to clear your head.
You will sleep this upon night.
To wake to the morning to resume your plight.

Love is fleeting this is all to real.
It will leave you lonely and cold as steel.
Mind your heart and follow your dream.
And with hope you will find true loves flickering gleam.
