Tormented: For me the gang culture is the problem...
The irony is that the gang culture thrives in places where not belonging to a gang is often even more dangerous than belonging.
I always felt safe in my hometown and where I life now.
Also, use things like common sense (avoid certain areas, don't do a shortcut through dark corners, don't be completely drunk to the point that you don't know what happens around you). I never was in a dangerous situation so far, hope it stays that way.
Oh, and simples, get rid of your gun culture.
