Blame Columbus, he thought he had hit India, and their sunburn made them look red, hence Red Indians. Apparently of Indian ancestary anyway.grin

Back when I used to work in DC in the 70's, there wasn't a single 'Honkie" on the team. A lot of people wanted to call them the Watutsies...it certainly still fits better To have a team named Redskins in the very city that historically made the policy of "The Good Injun is a dead injun", is in extremely bad taste and should be corrected.

Smithsonian linguist documented the words origin in an indian tribe and used to differentiate from the invading whites.

Scalping, often loosely associated with word, was not practiced by whites, nor was skinning by either race to my knowledge.

Myron Pottios was a honkie. He would overeat before a big game, line up directly over the other teams center and barf all over his helmet! The center couldnt move without a penalty until he hiked the ball! rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

I heard it like this... The NFL doesn't use crybaby names so having your race as the name of an NFL football team kinda seems like a compliment..cheering

Actually, that isa good point, but then let's have that 'racial' name reflect the racial make-up of that city. Wash. DC is at least 90% or more Black/ Afro-American; the old suggested names of Watutsies would cover the racial aspect: The Washington Watutsies (if not the ethnic/tribal background); we could also go for The Washington Ubangies...(the Ubangy tribe in the Democratic Republic of Congo); actually most any tribal name from Africa, well over a thousand to choose from.
Then again, perhaps the Federal govt. should step in and force the integration of that team, as racial segregation is against Federal law....perhaps they could even bus in some token white players from a nearby state such as Maryland or Virginia...or resort to quotas...Federal troops can be used to integrate the team and protect any white players that has been drafted by the Feds to help solve this dilemma of a team only of one colour...it almost could rival the desegregation of Ol' Miss! rolling on the floor laughing

If we wanted a laff we would of picked a whacky british columian tribe with 15 word names, rather than one that relates to American culture.

Will RG 3 come back to Superhuman Quarterback? Class act too.

You should check under your bed at night for racists. D.C. is no where near 90 % black. It takes a diseased if not creative imagination to think Redskin is a racist term.

Great to hear; what is it now, over 100%? laugh Geez, when I lived and went to school and later worked there it was around 90% and good ol' Marion Barry was Mayor when he was sober enough to remember his own name...and the Hanafi Muslims were on trial for the takeover of the Mosque and DC govt. buildings...
Ever hear of or know the word facetious?
Nothing an' no one under ma bed, I done nailed boards down to da floor so no fascists, racists, commies, amurikans or mooslims an' other kinds of ratz can gits themselves dere an' try scarin me!
Back when I lived there ,which was in several areas at times, each section of the city had their own names in case you didn't know; i.e.. Congress Heights was called Congo Heights, Southwest area by the Potomac was 'the Gold Coast', DC itself was always referred to as 'Ubangy Village On the Potomac'...and DC was the home of the longest bridge in the world, which was the 14th st. bridge: it went from Virginia to Africa...I was told this by a Congressman!rolling on the floor laughing God, those people were really weird and strange...and all the 'lobbyists' operated sex clubs used to help buy votes. It was a gold mine for a writer/journalist!applause laugh But, I was delighted to finally leave it . The whole city was like being locked up in St. Elizabeth's mental hospital...

Seriously though, the Washington youre talking about is just a mish mash of local districts. Yes, like every city, some ( but no where near 90%!) black districts existed.
Marion was elected as the second mayor of the mish mash in late 79.

The racism you encountered from the congressman or Senator doesnt surprise me. The Regan revolution generated a genuine contempt for blacks in the Republican party. Although it did have a few uncle toms, and still does. Jim Crow has moved and gone into hiding but it is alive and well.

The Washington of the football team refers to the nations capital, i.e. a huge metropolitan area
with federal triangle at its core.

The stadium is not even located in the colloquial mish mash .

Here's the way I see it: Those team names are NOT being used in any derogatory way. (That seems to be the core issue with this type of 'political correctness'). In fact, many native Americans say they like it, and want it, because it tends to promote their heritage in a positive way. I agree with them.

It is interesting in history of a lot of places. I was watching public television on a show about the history of blacks in Miami - and they changed the time over time from one area "Overtown" from Color town. Of course the south had until the 1970s the disgusting Jim Crow laws -

every time I read this stuff about how we treat each other, I think thank goodness I was born in Canada - then of course I remembered that in Canadian history the terrible discrimination against the Native Americans, the Asians building the railroads, and of course who can forget the Dukabors

Actually, things were back to normal when the above journalist was here.

He might of really enjoyed watching the huge columnns of smoke rising up from Washington in 67. The machine gun nests and tanks at the White House entrance. All the major arteries to Washington bumper to bumper with mobilized troops for hours and hours. And they werent even heading to Viet Nam!

We skipped school to have some fun but the bridges were blocked to D.C.

Oh, I remember the riot well! Still have lots of photos I took in the downtown areas, from around the Archives to 14th St and of all the looting and half asleep National Guard troops lounging around trying to appear brave, courageous and bold...rolling on the floor laughing
Trouble was, they had no ammo in their rifles. Robert Kennedy was around and would randomly check a soldier's rifle. We caught him berating one who did have live ammo; God he could scream just like a little girl! (That was down on 14th and Penn. Ave) . Out in S.E. DC, it was pure mayhem from HillCrest Heights to Fairfax Village, especially all the burning liquor stores with the Guard troops sitting back watching the looters helping themselves. Shame that most photos were not published.... Wish I had a video cam back then. One did see the rising plumes of fires all the way out to Penn. Avenue and Branch and up to Fairfax Village; Crowds were at the pharmacy watching and laughing...
So many people were so disappointed that the entire downtown area and the areas around the old Griffith Stadium and around Howard University didn't burn down. I remember 9th St. by the old DC Library burning away, especially the big liquor store there and people cheering like mad...it was great; so many looters, along F and G streets with shopping carts...it was like Carnival in New Orleans!rolling on the floor laughing
Anyway, my last time in DC was during the Lewinsky and Clinton "sexcapades"... the time of the enraged attempts to impeach Clinton whose feeble inability to explain adequately his (carnal) relationship with Monica while the ex-FBI agent Aldrich tried to sell us all his story of having seen Hillary Clinton decorating the White House Christmas tree with se-xual and drug related paraphernalia...hey, it was Party Time ! laugh No one bought into it,,,we always wondered as no source within the White House would confirm it....vocally, that is. Facially was another matter altogether but we could not use it other than a 'heard rumour' which only enraged the prosecutor's office even more. He seemed like another Mc Carthy with all his ranting and raving. I was glad to leave that capital of insane asylums.
What part of the city did you live in? For the most part, I lived on upper Conn. Ave near Chevy Chase Circle and on Foxhall Road that later became the stylish area for some embassies.
