The earth can provide food for many times the population we have now. It is a culture of anti cooperation, backwards religion and power mongering by many third world nations leaders that stand in the way of stopping all the horsemen that will herald our destruction as a total unified race of sharing and caring humans.

Hunger and overpopulation are only the obvious symptoms of a far greater disease which is everybody trying to protect their own little niche of goodies from all the rest. Soil erosion, desalinization, cross breeding of predatory species naturally or unnaturally, selling of resources and not replenishing, destruction of sustainable resources in favor of the here and now. the bribing of tribes men and government officials of third world countries for natural resources, wars of power and oppression for basic food stuffs and money sending refugees into adjacent countries to strip their resources all add to this apocalyptic scenario. There is enough food for all and the ability to provide for many times over however, the wasting of these resources and, the blockage of transport to areas where people could be gainfully employed to trade for same ensures that not much is going to change.

Good news is that it's a self curing problem. Do nothing and sooner or later food will be enough for the local population be it one or two people left.

Its already happening, seriously thinking on this, and not having any evidence in my opinion, mother nature takes care of the population as much as possible with natual disasters and things of this nature..We are having a hard time geting food to other countries to feed them, although sometimes other countries have their own way of controling population.

In response to: Drewski, I have to disagree with you on this topic.

If you did you certainly fooled me as everything you said was what I said. There is the ability to feed the world and more if certain things are done to prevent the problems you and I both agree are there.

Why is it that you and others that think like you have to start a discussion with their prejudices in the front?
To start with: First world, thrid world? and think of the fact that now you all promote "unified planet". So you talk that way? Unified world with first, seond, thirld, and other worlds? First of all, there is not such a thing at all. I do not use that stupid terminology that maybe had certain justification long ago but not now.... third? third of what?

And as you are blaming "third-world" countries and backwards religion about the lack of "cooperation" , can you give us detailed examples how this action produce shortages of food in the planet? can you explain for example with your superb theories how the huge centres of production of food in the Andes long ago were disrupted by "Power mongering"? Can you, dear Dr. Thirl World?

As I have always read from you, there is always this gaseous way to dodge the real reasons of a problem and its replacement with rethorics and prejudices.
You have to learn form the other poster to talk openly. So thirld-world coutnries are behind the future famine of the planet? Give me a break...!! and then, whenever you can not retort anything to the clear post of our friend you conclude with one of those typical empty phrases: "the problems we all know the planet has"
And "agree on solutions for those problems" solutions? you would have to turn the world upside down to solve those problems, above all stop this mad economic order that privileges wealth and profit to life. Can anybody do soemthig about that? probably not , but then your "solutions" or "possible solutions" are just nothing but words..
We can only dennounce an insane system, that is all we can do and I will always do that, just because there are many that only want to fool themselves creating tales that distract people from the real causes of this mess. It makes me sick so I prefer to swim against the current and speak of the rotten nature of a system of life others defend armored with lies and hypocrisy.

Conrad73: Anhydrous Ammonia, are you trying to kid me?

Anhydrous Ammonia is Liquefied Ammonia Gas!

Ok , don´t be so rigurous with little chemical details. I do not even know the name of the nitrates used in agriculture. The fact is that soil is killed as an organic thing by all that crap used to feed more and more humans.
A little mistake of the poster can not disquaily his valuable contribution. Or you think earth has a marvelous chance with technological and cheamical-freak civilization?

The Fertilizer he's thinking about,is Ammonium Nitrate, also used in Explosives.
And Plants don't eat Soil, they Take up dissolved Chemicals, like Nitrates Phosphates etc.
That's why Hydroponics work, maybe some Day the best chance for Humanity's survival.
India,Israel and other Countries have already discovered the Advantage of Aquaculture and Hydroponics.
Now it needs to be practiced with minimal Impact on the Environment, which is not always happening at the moment.

I will find out about that. Negative side effects like the overuse of water maybe?
And how much water will we have in the future?

What you say about the intake of chemicals by a plant is true but that is the chemical part of the process. You know nature is not composed just as a sum of biological or chemical process isolated from a whole mechanism. The presence of micro-organisms in the soil is necessary (yes plants do not eat soil), the presence of natural cycles is necessary too (for example the nitrogen cycle which has been completely disrupted by the use of nitrates) etc, etc. Do we men know all this? we have made up with some poor aproximations of tiny parts of the infinite thread of life but we think we have done a lot, or we think we can decipher the mind of God. That arrogance will kill us.
