We called it Mala.

i remember the first day i landed in junior infants and was given this strange substance to play with, i was told by the wise teacher that this was mala and so it was mala

MARLA it to me was always pronounced MARLA with the "R"
to me.
I remember getting white flat cardboard packets of it
with different colours of strips back in the 80's
that always ended up a kinda multi coloured brownish or
purple colour when all mashed up together, and it always
went hard.
Growing up in Primary school the teachers managed to get
bricks of plasticine of one colour which was slightly harder than what we called Marla.
Roll on a decade or two and you hear of this thing
called play dough which was no comparassion and could
be made by any house wife with flour lots of salt and food colouring by boiling in a sauspan.
for the mmore mature you could buy model clay in Easons that was like Marla with the added
advantage of being able to cook it in the oven to may clay.
Had a bigdiscussion about this topic last year with a few other teachers
to me.

During FCA camp a few years ago we were staying over night for a few nights in galway.when we'd finish in the evening we'd shower and hit the town for the night.One guy used insist in making a big deal out of getting ready and had all his potions left round the bathrooms.he'd finish by putting on this expensive aftershave.One evening when he wasn't looking we took his aftershave into the jacks and spilt out half of it and replaced it with 'guess what'.it brightened up everyones evening from then on to see his splash on his aftershave !!
