Is it to only surf the Internet or watch movies or gaming or high end applications? Will you use the laptop indoors or outdoors? Are you going to store a lot of data on your laptop? All these questions will determine the kind of requirements you have, when it comes to buying a new laptop.

If it is a true "laptop" look at where the cooling fans are. If they exhaust on the bottom your lap is going to get hot! Also, if the way you use it blocks the cooling fans your slowly killing your laptop. It is hard to find a laptop now that does not have this problem. They have been selling cooling pads for laptops for a while now, but it seemed there was a push on them this last Thanksgiving during the big sales in the USA.
Where are your ports located? Are they placed so they when you plug into them the memory sticks, earbud wires or power cables cause you a problem in just trying to fit it onto a small desk area?
Also, if you use a laptop with the power cord plugged in take out your battery. Your not using it. All you are really doing is keeping it in there as it is a convenient place to store it and sometimes you may actually use it on battery power. What is really happening is that your storing it in a place that gets hot. For a lithium battery this is the kiss of death. That is why some computers you need to replace the batteries after only a year. If you wonder why your 4 hour battery life is only 1 hour, this is why. Take the batty out and keep in a safe cool place, but not in your junk draw where something else you have in there can hit the battery terminals. Be aware of the battery terminals. Believe me when I say lithium batteries burn up like putting gas on a barbecue grill when they get shorted out! They are dangerous this way and you do not want to burn your house down. I have lithium batteries 3 years old still giving me full charge.
Something to save you money! RAM memory is still the best thing to have, especially if your doing graphics. The lower priced laptops seem to be featuring on 3GB of RAM, the more expensive laptops are the ones with 4GB's of RAM. Microsofts Windows 7 has an easy way to add memory. It is called the "ReadyBoost" feature. Considering that when you buy a laptop they are going to charge maybe a $100.00 more just to go from 3GB to 4GB RAM. Now that it is the holidays and the memory sticks and SDHC cards are on sale for low prices you can save money by not buying a computer with the most RAM and get a 8GB stick or card for less then $20.00. If you have a digital camera you have SDHC cards so this would occupy the SDHC card reader on the laptop when you download unless you have a separate reader card. If your using Photoshop you probably want to use a memory stick.

Sorry, I didn't explain the "ReadyBoost" feature more. It allows you to configure a SDHC or memory stick as dedicated memory or you can also still use it like a normal SDHC/memroy stick and the capacity you have not used is used by the computer when it is plugged in. If you have an older computer with limited memory and are able to upgrade it to Windows 7 you might find this a nice feature!
It should be handy on a net book with only 1GB of RAM installed.

What do I look for? That's just it, I only look as I can't afford I go to the Apple shop and run my fingers over the latest slinky models (not, not the shop assistants!)

I would have guessed you have to watch out for the shop assistants wanting to run their fingers over you!
ram ,size It has to have lots of storage space,be able to handle any program i might down load.Be able to run more then one program at a time.I don't like one that is to big, want it light and compact, because i move it around,i even use it outside in the summer.

This is very true....When in my barracks when I was in the Army....I was in the middle of a shower and suddenly the buildings alarm went off.....I found out it was my room they responded too..Here I find out my laptop had fried and let out a "poof" of smoke , just enough to set off the alarm...I sat out in the cold wrapped in nothing but a towel (I wasn't the only one thankgod) for about 45minutes only to have a fireman tell me my laptop was nomore.

Hi Chocobloc, which reminds me I have a Mars Bar stashed ..mmm Personally being a gamer I like a machine with grunt and was impressed by the features of my current machine which is 2years old which is an NEC Versa P9110. This is the first laptop I have purchased and I must say I am very happy with it mainly as it has the grunt I was looking for which superceded the desk top it replaced. It has Gforce Graphics Engine plenty of RAM and hard disc space plus all the features of a desktop and more with built-in 4 speakers x4 and woofer, numeric keypad, bluetooth, built in webcam and full audio properties plus plenty of usb ports and express card slot. I like that when I am on the move it doesnt need packing up other than for going into a carry bag.
NEC build a great machine sadly though they are no longer selling them here in Australia ..
