lilmamma71: No offense is meant by this post, but I just have a valid question here:
Are you making generalizations and judgments about people living on assistance as being drug addicts, alcoholics, untidy, toothless and lazy?
If so....maybe this might be prevalent among the clients you serve, but I can assure you personally this is NOT always the case in every situation.
I know a lady that worked 2 jobs, went to school, took care of her children and had to have daycare assistance, food and medical insurance assistance while she went to school to better herself and her situation...she was not any of the above as you had mentioned.
She was widowed and had been a homemaker her entire married life and had no secondary education, once she was displaced due to her husbands death, she did what she had to do to make a better life for herself and her kids and I'm quite proud to call her my friend.
Not everyone's situation of being on gov. assistance is the same and while there are the loafers and people that take advantage of it, I know a lot of people that have used it only as a temporary step-up to a better life when needed.
That's all I have to say about that.
Hi Lilmamma..
None taken... I applaud anyone at all for giving it a go... and even if they do not suceed the first time they will soon enough if they are willing... No god help them.. I see way worse than that..and yes, because of heaps of different reasons they usually group in areas... because that is the comfort zone for them.. and that is Ok too... but I dont want to be part of it in my personal life... therefore I choose to not live out north. .. and for the doubters ... yes some very nice people I am sure live north, because they dont have the financial means to live where they perhaps would choose if given a chance.. I acknowledge that...
venusenvy: I remember driving through there. It was beautiful and so were the people
Infact I had the biggest breakfast of my life in Kentucky...I ordered Pancakes, Bacon and Coffee...I got a huge stack of pancakes, a platter of bacon and a whole pot of coffee...One of the best breakfasts ever...And the people were so gentile and friendly

Amity: wow.... You make people sound like lepers.
So if you met someone who was unable to work due to illness/disability you would rebuff them due to being on welfare as they have no other choice? Shocking...Sorry to read this from you.
No Amity... stop nit picking..
I choose my personal life... I have made my friends whom I have known for years and years.. I am quite isolated in the hills where I live and I am a bit of a recluse sometimes... Its my coping mechanism... I really dont need to be where I dont want to be and with whom I dont share core values with...

You mentioning breaskfast just brought something to mind.
I'll never forget the time my late husband and I stopped at a Waffle House I think it was Kentucky to eat breakfast. After our meal my husband went up to pay for our meal.He also handed the waitress a one dollar tip.She asked him if he was married. We both laughed. The men sitting at the stools gave my husband a dirty look.

Oh wow..um I was not trying to nit pick, i just read your post and i can only come to the conclusions you have given me...
Thanks for verifying....sorry to have bothered you.
Ccincy: You're welcome and I'll miss you too. What was so sad was that my late husband was a well educated man who went through college and recieved an all A grade in computers.
While living in that shelter home he began working for the same church as their computer tech for only 10 dollars an hour compared to what he was used to making an hour as starting wage at the steel company. We were also about 2 months away from paying our car off when the bottom fell out from under us.
All during this time we were homeless I began volunteering at my son's grade school and started a clothing closet for the students at the school. It was my way of giving back to the community that we so snobbishly took for granted.
That is so wonderful of you. People often forget and again take things for granted. I try and give back as much as possible.
I grew up very poor. Daddy worked the log mills and momma raised us 6 kids. My adult life has been blessed. I have my own business, nice house, healthy happy daughter. Ive never forgot what it was like back then and never will. To be honest Im scared everyday that everything Ive worked for is gonna be gone. You are one strong woman.
