Liberal leader Justin Trudeau this week made perhaps the boldest move of his political career — one that could rally Canadians to his side in the upcoming election, or merely solidify the support that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is counting on for re-election.
In an evening speech to a Toronto audience on Monday, Trudeau accused Harper of deliberately fostering fear and prejudice against Muslims.
He took direct aim at Harper for using a public appearance last month in Quebec — where religious accommodation is a hot-button issue — to severely criticize those who want to wear the niqab, a religious garment that covers the face, at citizenship ceremonies.
Trudeau ridiculed as a “cruel joke” Harper’s explanation that he wants to liberate Muslim women from oppression.
“We all know what is going on here,” said Trudeau. “It is nothing less than an attempt to play on people’s fears and foster prejudice, directly toward the Muslim faith.”
I find it hard to believe that the Canadian PM is in fact "worried" about women in general or wanting to capitalize on fear...what do you think?...
ken This was my favorite skit by Carol...she was certainly funny!!...another one I enjoyed was Flip Wilson...remember him?...I think one of the reasons why comedy skits aren't popular is the overall cost of producing such shows...Bob Mackie being the costume designer for the Carol Burnett show...
theresa It is amazing that they were not charged!...to think that they allowed that boy and his sister to be treated cruelly is shocking...and the Society that allowed the couple to "look after" him should have also been charged...
ken This particular story was one of the most severe in Canada...the care providers had a child already die in their home previously and her own kids were taken away...but allowed to adopt her grandchildren...makes no sense...truly sad...they have a statue dedicated for that little boy Jeffery...
fly The center failed at investigating foster parents or potential adoptive parents...the government stepped in and made recommendations...to help reduce such tragedies..
