Couch surfing is a great concept and one I'm familiar with. Not only is it a great way to experience a new place as you are living and getting advice from locals, it is also a great way to live vicariously through other travellers when they stay with you.
From where you are standing now it may seem impossible to move forward, but in time this sense of loss will diminish and your days will become brighter.
Maybe do some things for your self for a while, little weekend away with a friend or two, perhaps pamper yourself with a massage, trip to the hair salon or maybe even take up that hobby you thought you might like to do. Volunteer at a school, orphanage, church or homeless shelter as this will not only introduce you to new people but also put things in perspective a little.
Just ideas and maybe not right for you, but I think the worst thing you can do is sit around thinking about what you have lost. Look at what is still possible.
