Dreams, I do believe (read somewhere) is the sub conscious mind's way of expressing itself. Your fears, ambitions, desires etc. are expressed via these dreams...I read a beautiful book recently (Conversations with The Universe by Simran Singh) if which she explains how the entire Universe is talking to us - if we care to listen.

From your self, experiences, house, car, pets, flora & fauna that you encounter in your daily routine...they all have messages...The Native Americans also mention this in their belief systems - which was why they were in complete tune with the land, the bison & the wolf!
