A friend of mine drove to Pakistan through Iran a few years ago. Unfortunately he was refused entry into Pakistan at the Iranian border. However for some reason due to his visa restrictions he couldn't leave Iran for thirty days. He was taken in by an Iranian family, looked after, fed and watered for as long as he needed. They wouldn't take any money off him, they just wanted to help a traveling stranger as if he was one of their own. On his return he said to me, "Graham, go to Iran some day, they are beautiful people, you will be well looked after."
"There is a local legend which states that the Devil and St. David were supposedly fighting on the roof of the cathedral, and St. David pushed the Devil off the roof, and the imprint of the Devil’s footprints are situated by the door to the cathedral."
Have you ever been to the Krazy Kangaruh bar on the slopes at St Anton? Unlike most moutain bars it's open till 8pm. Skiing the short distance back down the mountain after last orders reveals some 'krazy' sights.
"And I remember thinking, bloody hell I'm going to die to BoneyM."
One mans story of how when faced with death, a song that he hated wouldn't leave his head. From the film 'Touching the Void' a gripping and compelling story of survival against all the odds.
I suppose it carries more credence if you have been there, but a lot of knowledge can be acquired about a place and passed on without actually having been there.
I don't think you can make it a hard and fast rule that you have to have visited a place before you can recommend it.
Swat is very beautiful, but almost all the tourists visiting Swat only visit the lower reaches of the valley, usually as far as the roadhead. The upper reaches of Swat valley are remote, wild and spectacular and almost totally deserted. These days of course Swat is not the place for foreign visitors, but hopefully one day soon this wonderful and wild area will once more be accessible to all who seek excitement and adventure.
