Later i had occasion to milk cows in Switzerland, 27 Brown Swiss cows that lived the whole winter in a million dollar barn, the cows spent 24 \ 7 with chain each side of her head, standing or sitting on a rubber mat, in front her was tough that three or times a day i forked hay into. Behind her was drain with automatic sweeper device the dung and poo got swept along into do underground tanks. From time to time the Stick-Stuff from the tanks was spread on-top a nearby paddock covered in snow.
My duties included bushing each cow every day and forking the hay, together with few the village folks we got stoned, and yarned as we hand milked the cows. Every now and then we let the cows out to play in the snow outside for an hour or so. This link goes to a photo taken later by someone else, of the very cows and barn in the Swiss i really enjoyed my time in

I left school to work on a dairy farm milking 90 odd mostly first cross cows, it also had a 15 sow piggery. I worked for the 29% Share Milker for 30 shillings a week. 29% Share Farmer purchased 29% of the owners cows and owned half the pigs, the Share Farmer was responsible for all the milking and livestock management, other work like fencing i think got paid for his time by the owner. In those days the milk was taken to a farmer owned cooperative dairy company, the company made cheese that was mostly exported to the UK. The milk was taken every morning to the dairy factory in milk cans and whey from yesterday days milk was brought back on return for the pigs.
