why don't you ask him? Maybe, just maybe she was one of his friends? Maybe he thought that you were all friends....the best thing to do is just to ask him---then you should get a fairly decent answer...
not to disagree, but I disagree...I've had so called meaningful conversations and ended up holding the bag as well. In some ways, I wish the conversations were light hearted and easy going because you start to get to know someone and they end up leaving sometimes you never understand why...so...it's a crap shoot at best---jmo

but what you don't seem to understand is that time is valuable, and well worth spent.If he's been lying, there's nothing to decide, but taking that slap in the face and turning your back to it is no easy punishment. Nor is it a fair one.
I like how some men can seemingly turn off their emotions. I really wish I had that power switch. I seriously do.
