Gods were made by man to control large groups of people. When people first lived in small groups, everybody knew everybody else and what everybody was doing. As those groups became larger, it became harder to keep an eye everybody, so man invented all powerful beings to keep everybody in line. Today's catholic church is a prime example-long involved ornate rituals (that you must attend at least weekly or you'll go straight to hell) that are just fluff designed to keep you filled with fear and blindly obedient to the priest. Meanwhile the priests are raping little boys, nuns, and each other and the church( and god) do nothing but deny and hide the truth. Where is god?? How many wars are being fought on this planet right now in the name of god, yet god does nothing to stop them-why???
Religion is based upon fear and how a small group of power hungry men used that fear of the unknown to get the blind unquestioning obedience (and the money) of many millions of people. Science has facts that have been proven (usually more than once) by rigorous testing and peer review. Many of the bibles stories were written in places that existed because the authors lived there and that made the stories more believable to the people. Most of the stories of the bible were written a full 100 (or many more) years after the events were supposed to have taken place so there were no direct witnesses to said events, just the place settings to make it sound real. Science has proven that. It's like Steven King placing many of his stories in New England, because he lives there and knows the area. It gives his stories a sense of reality. So science and knowledge wins and will continue to win.
