Losar is Tibetan for New Year. The Tibetan calendar is based on Tibetan astrology, a synthesis of Indian and Chinese astrology. The Tibetan calendar is lunar, which means it follows the cycles of the moon, so the New Year begins on a new moon.
The Losar Rituals have many Buddhist elements, but Losar is primarily a secular event with its own flavor. The Tibetan Losar tradition contains elements and values that we share as human beings and, as in our own Western cultures, the New Year here means a fresh beginning. Non-Tibetans are always welcome at these celebrations. The specific rituals are not exclusive; everyone is invited to join the welcoming of a fresh start.

When a war turns into a nation
HO CHI MINH CITY • Visiting Vietnam recently during its Tet holiday season, the mind went back to the famous military campaign a half-century ago that in many ways signalled a decisive turn in the Vietnam War.
In a series of surprise attacks launched on Jan 30, 1968 called the Tet Offensive, the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese People's Army took on US forces and the American-backed regime in South Vietnam. Americans, who'd been led into believing that they were winning the war against communism, were shocked.
In 1287, Gen. Omar Khan of the Yuan Dynasty led a sizeable invasion force, including numerous war junks, against Dai Viet (present day Vietnam). With battle-hardened Mongols forming the vanguard, it seemed as if the campaign would be a walkover for China. But a naval battle the following year proved otherwise. In the estuary of the Bach Dang River near Ha Long Bay, Dai Viet general Tran Hung Dao repeated the feat accomplished by the earlier, celebrated general Ngo Quyen against the Southern Han Chinese invaders, back in the year 938....>
