Yeah I hear you ... I think that could be said of the Warden also , as much as he disliked that part of his job ,it was necessary for him to do it... Who knows , he may have thought he was doing some good in his job, and organising a state santioned killing was a necessary evil . Sorry to state yet again , psycologists say we do not act in ways that would be completely out of our comfort zones ... so perhaps the Warden was of a mind that "if you do the crime " then what the State warrants to be justice , in this case "being put to death " was on "THEM " rather than it being an action or wish of his own . Therefore the Warden did not sanction it nor ask for the death penalty and his "comfort zone" was not questioned . One wonders had he, the Warden been asked to "sentence " the criminal would he choose to give the death penalty .. My quess is he wouldn't.
I could never be the one to "pull the plug " or administer the lethal injection... It would traumatise me for life .Also I am anti Capital Punnishment .
In life ,however we all are required to make choices . If we take on a job ,in this exmaple the Warden's job , we are aware before the employment starts what it will entail .... My take on it is the the Warden complied with his job requiremants and rightly so ... had he not done so ,his career would have been on the line and most probably terminated IMO .
Psychologists would argue the the prison warden was in "The Agentic State" when carrying out his duties ,by this they mean that the warden would do his duty as his bosses wished .. because it was not "him " doing it IE killing someone but the "State " therefore freeing him ,the warden of any responsibility whatever .... The warden being "An Agent " of the state .
