how much,do you realy know?

i was born here in sa in 1959,and in those days it was called the"apartheid"years,we as white people ,as accussed by some black polititions, will tell you and the world that we were the "privelidged"but it is and was not the truth, there were people like my family that have respected the people that have worked for us in our house and garden, and even at night we hidden them from patrols of the then police, even in those days a man without money ,was a man without rights, even the so called "disadvantaged"who had money and was ritch, were looked after by the "white "goverment, then along came change in 1994,and we had our first democratic election and a new goverment(a black one)and we got now human rights, wow that was something we never had,and we all trusted in the new rainbow south africa,as the word says same nonsence different people, now its 16 years later from the change ,and what has actually being done,a few blacks got positions where they are not quilify to be,white and black people living under a plague of terror and crime?a country without the ability to protect its citizins and provide them with "proper" health care" and admission to protect their rights in a court of law,its a waist ,south africa ,is just like any other dictating country where the power of the rich and powerfull, will take the average man in the streets where they want them to go,in the 70s and 80 ,we had to do 2 year military training, and it as compulsive if you didnt want to go,you go to jail for 2 years, which of any of the powerfull, can ever give back those boys of 18-23 to their parents?and for what?

Philipt, I have to say that from reading your blog, you carry so much bitterness in your heart, I was born in 1944 and spent 56 years of my life in SA, so having grown up during the apartheid years I have seen and experienced it all first hand.

I have never condoned apartheid, but in order to move on in life we all have to leave the past behind, learn from our mistakes, move forward and stay positive.

Mandela is a fine example! No-one had more reason to be bitter than he did, though he carries love in his heart and he stayed positive and did all he could to bring about the changes and a good future for all the people of SA regardless of colour or creed!

I visit Cape Town every year having family still living there, and I can say I feel so proud to see changes each time I'm over there for the better, and how people seem to be coming together both black and white, and working side by side peacefully.

I have painted the brighter picture here, and I do have enough sense to know that there are still many hurdles to overcome, and crime is still rife in certain areas, but no country in the world is without crime, and Rome wasn't built in a day.

All the people of SA can do now, is to work together as a nation, have faith, stay positive and never look back!!!

I am and always will be proud to be South African!
hi swordfish,no i dont say that all of the goverments people are bad and corrupt,a leader like nelson mandela, unfortunatly comes once in a life time,i love my country i have defended my country in those years on the borders of our land,no i am not bitter i am confused that actually nothing has changed, every day on anc rallys, the nation black and white get made up by people like julius malemma, who the world only saw after he sworn a journalist hatred in each other grow and grow, and it will never stop,it was supposed to stop by our children,as they have grown up with one another, and still people rant and rave about the past ,so will it ever stop?confused
Hi Philipt, no I don't think it will ever stop, many people are bitter about the past, it goes right back to the Anglo Saxon days, but we ourselves can be positive.
I'm sure you do love your country, and I commend you for fighting on the borders to defend it, my brother did too.... but I assure you, a lot of things have changed for the better... I don't know where you live now, but perhaps because I live in the UK, the changes are more obvious to me each time I go back.
Hi Philip

I was also brought up in Sa and also lived through apartheid. It does not matter if things have not really improved because everywere in the world things are just as bad....i mean look at our politicians here in Greece ...they become richer and we are now taxed out of our ears for their mistakes or better their greed and their evil curuption. The people there in Sa where not free ,they were treated worse than rubish and treated like they were nothing.....i am very happy apartheid is gone as now at least they have the chance to develop and to take charge if they can to become what they want...........sometimes people dont have money or food but we have freedom of choice...freedom to vote ........I am just very very happy apatheid is gone as it was so evil.....the point is that they are free as all humans should be....forget what happened it the past (army and stuff)that was the law then ......i wish i could tell you things will improve but the whole world is going mad and unfortunatly money the biggest evil(after apartheid)will aleays be around to curupt people and countries.....we just have to try and become better souls and live as best as we can........and if we can try be humble and kind...
sunshine7 with this post you are what i call, a S,A Greek without blinkers.Congrats
