It was my Saturday off work. I woke up as late as 8 am but still felt very tired. Had breakfast in front of TV and watched a silly traditional soap that is produced for kids and adults aged over 60 (my mother falls into this category). Simply, it’s because the soap doesn’t require much attention from the audience while the audience will still know the story very well even though they missed it three months ago.
My mother cannot watch any complicated soaps because she doesn’t get anything. That annoys me because I often visit a fridge and I have her sit in front of the TV and tell me everything when I’m back. But she can’t say any characters’ names correctly despite her intense attention. So I shouldn’t hope that she can narrate the story accurately. I used to ask her what was the use of watching it when she didn’t get anything. It’s a waste of time, money, and energy.
What’s unusual about my mother is she must watch the end of every soap-opera. That’s common for the audience in general who must know how the soap they like ends, but not my mother. I wouldn’t have said anything against her if she had followed the soap from the beginning. Actually, she has never watched any and she claims she must watch the end.
My couch potato sister is not happy because there are a few beginnings and a few ends she must watch, too. I once asked my mother, ‘Why’? This question has never been answered by her. That’s another reason why I bought another TV. She can enjoy anything she wants: the beginning, the middle, or the end at her will without having to retell any part to me.
