I would say for "security" - just in case the "relationship" or whatever that person is having doesn´t work out, then they live to have an escape door...?
I was myself in a relationship with someone on this site - I mean in the real world! - and he just stayed on the site and was checking his mail on a regular basis.
After ending the relationship a few months later, he told me someone else was in his life but... he is still on this site - and many others! - and has never changed his profile or even deleted it!
I think its really amazing how we get to socialise with people all over world like this
