The only reason I can think of is cos they're a bit thick ? Any lies told about who or what they are or look like will be fairly quickly uncovered when people meet.. whatever it is they're trying to hide, cover up or distract from can't surely be worse than being proven a liar !!

Point 2 is thinking that people are so smitten with them when they meet in person that they overlook lying. laugh
