It would be a tearjerker/drama. Robert Redford would probably be the best actor to play the part. Although, Alan Alda would be a good second choice if you can imagine him in a serious role. His sarcastic wit would certainly fit the comedic parts of the movie which would be plentiful in spite of it being a drama overall.
