Adapted from Life After Death: The Burden of Proof, by Deepak Chopra (Harmony Books, 2006).
A karmic debt is, basically, any cause that hasn’t yet found its effect.
According to the rishis, punishment in the afterlife is the result of unpaid karmic debts. If I commit a crime and don’t pay for it here on Earth, I will pay by suffering later. Hell is the condition of karmic suffering. It is worth remembering that hellish experiences don’t depend upon dying. People have seen Satan in dreams, visions, imagination, and even in the flesh. Our minds put us in hell, and they can take us out again.
Whether suffering is created here on earth through physical pain or in the afterlife through psychological torment, the causes remain the same, since they can be tracked back to the working of Karma.
By saying that bad karma will one day catch up with wrongdoers, are we guilty of wish fulfillment? Skeptics would certainly say yes, because if a karmic debt is paid outside the material world, it isn’t being paid at all.
The matter can’t be easily settled, but in spiritual terms we can observe the difference between someone who is mature–and by implication has paid off some debts–and someone who is immature, loaded down with unpaid debts. The spiritually mature person pursues a meaningful life through self-worth, love, truth, appreciation and gratitude, reverence, and non-violence.
somechick: Yes I do.I think sometimes we may not always become aware of the reason, but I believe there is a reason for everything.
A master archetect can not possibly build a building or structure with out first having a plan for it's use, or reson to be. You and I would not be here if it were not part of a plan. Think about it.
In response to: So do you believe that everything happens for a reason and why/why not?
Would appreciate to hear your opinions.
Yes but maybe that is just because I don't want to believe that life is random and there is no learning from things. I also believe that people are not in our lives by accident either. Sometimes the seeming randomness of things gets me down.

I think you are wonderfully and beautifully created. You are unique and one of a kind. I like ya just the way you are, in other words.
What reason would it be to scare a toddler with third degree burns? Is this a lesson of endurance taught to a child. Preparation for the life to come. Over my years of life, I have had to look back and ask? Why? I look around me and know why now. The understanding I have given to others is only because I know their pain. For me it is spiritual. I was ment to understand what others go through and aid in any way I can. JMO

See, Dawn...this is the difference between us, Sis...because of this belief, the seeming randomness doesn't get me down.
I believe everything, and everyone, comes into our lives for a reason. There's much more to what I believe on this, but I'll leave it there for now.

Thanks Wixie. How did you know that Psalm 139 was one of my favorites. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. Awesomely powerful poetry there. I think there would be less heartache if a lot of people really understood how unique and precious they are. Less anger, violence a lot of things if we could just be kind to ourselves and others more. I appreciate what you said. Made me cry.

That's true wix very true. I wouldn't be here having all the fun I'm having.

I was thinking of the randomness of all those people getting wiped in Indonesia a couple of years ago and how life seems random. My question about that is when major things happen does God blink? Did he turn his head from all those innocent children dying?

That's how I feel about the rapes, and everything I went through growing up with an abusive mother. I've been given great strength, and everything I've survived and overcome in life has developed it further...as well as my wisdom. Because of what I've been through I've studied martial arts, learned how to use a knife and a gun very well, including special training with a gun defense instructor. I have shared my story and helped other women to learn these same things.
Also, because of all I've been through, I don't fear anyone. I am not the person to attack in a dark alley, and I walk with a confidence that shows that now.

No, Sweetie...it's just part of the greater plan.
We aren't the Weaver, and we only see our own thread in the pattern, not the overall tapestry. I forget where that comes from, but I know it's stuck with me for many, many years.

Well to be honest it helped destroy my faith and I should have been struck down from shaking my fist at the sky and screaming at a being that doesn't seem to give a crap about those down here trying to figure it all out. Not trying to be negative just trying to be real. Maybe I should not be on the forums today lol. I am not funny lol.

And because of it, so do others.
Druides to have gone through what you have and still believe that there was a reason!! i admire you and your strength!
I'm a believer in things happening for a reason. As Dru said, sometimes (at least at first) we don't have an explanation for it. But usually, as time goes on, we can start to put the pieces of the puzzle together. It's kind of like a chain of events, karma, "what goes around, comes around" sort of thing.

Sweetowen! Thanks for your input. I find it hard to believe as you and druides do!v

I think it does...but it's not until later that we figure out the reason....and it is often a good one.....
