Yes they legally can. I work for a company whose contractual agreements upon acceptance of employment state that all creations, publishings, inventions, etc of a personal nature become the sole property of the company regardless of whether or not it relates to the job or was created/published off work time. My sister is an attorney in Lincoln, and I verified years ago that it's all legal.
Odd isn't it...? I mean, if I write a book about SciFi and publish it, my employer can lay claim to the intellectual rights even though I work in hte telecommunications industry. I don't get it, either, but it all true.
Yes, CS owns everything you post to this forums automatically.
I've seen some people post poetry and put a copyright notice at the bottom of it. That copyright notice is completely meaningless when they post their poem here because by the very act of posting it here they have given all the rights to CS.
A copyright notice at the bottom of a piece does not protect it if the author gives the work away. And the act of posting it here is doing just that.
Bottom line is simple. If you have something you want to keep copyrighted don't post it here.
There are poetry, and writing forums on the Internet who will respect and protect the copyright of their posters. In fact, by posting your work there you can actually use their site to help verify the date of your copyright.
However, CS's policy clearly states that by posting here you are automatically giving them the rights to anything you post.
So if you want to copyright something DON'T post it on this site! It's really that simple.
They clearly state in their user policy that anything you post here becomes their property. It's YOUR responsibilty to READ and understand that policy BEFORE you post.
