toranoga: Looking at it from a local perspective, I have no problem helping those who really deserve help, but I totally resent the Federal government telling everyone else who is deserving and who isn't. I think each of us in cooperation with our own local governments are much more able to determine that than Federal, or even state government.
Truth be known...churches and food pantries hand out thousands and thousands of lbs of food and supplies weekly around here.

That's where things get screwed up. Feds tie requirements into funding. But in actually, the funds should never get to the federal level. Most issues should be state and local.

Local government can work and partner with local churches, food pantries and civic groups to accomplish this. The problem is that states and the federal government have moved in on all of the local providers and over time have taken away their autonomy and even their ability to function.
