The 'drive' to impress other people with your possessions is another way of advertising the lack of faith in your own ability to impress.
People who do this have a problem. It's called the inferiority complex.
If a person does not identify with thier possessions - fair game.
Incidentally I don't believe all people who own flashy cars or other stuff, necessarily have this problem.
