Recognition...

Yes definately - and not always nice.

Your eyes find each other and it's there.

Yes, and some are stranger than others. It is just of a moment but it is the same. Acknowledgment with eye contact.

Absolutely. Soul recognition...you look in their eyes and know that you know them from somewhen, and suddenly a stranger isn't strange anymore. The eyes really are the windows to the soul. wine

Hmmm...

Yes... And in so many ways other than might be considered typical... A chance meeting of the eyes in a barroom mirror and suddenly the rest of the room ceases to exist. You know the eyes though you've never before seen the face they peer out of. And the eyes know and recognize you and you recognize in each other an enmity and know each other for the adversaries you have been through all of time. And you realize that unless one of you leaves immediately, neither of you will leave until whatever it is between you is once again laid to rest. At the best of times a grudging mutual respect shines through and you may go so far as to buy each other a beer and even chat a bit knowing that so long as your enemy is at your side no one else dares come against either of you. Then, with a nod, you part company knowing that this wasn't the time, but the time will indeed come... Bet on it.

At other times a chance comment overheard from a stranger causes you to take a second look. You think, "That's exactly what I would have said in that situation!" Sometimes you even mention it to the stranger and the mutual recognition flares briefly in their face like a thumb-snapped Lucifer. And you know that even though you'll probably never see this person again after today, wherever they are you'll always have a friend.

There exists, I think, in all of us to a degree the ability to recognize kindred souls and enemies from time out of mind - the reincarnational players that make up our lives, if you will. Some are more adept at this than others and I think it's because some simply have no desire to lift the veil that prevents recognition or, more simply, do not know how to lift the veil.

Of the four really close friends I've had on this earth - one of whom was a cat - none was a stranger when we met even though we may have had to be introduced or introduced ourselves to each other. In all cases there was an instant recognition of sorts. In a few instances, we have discussed it at great length and in others there was no need to wonder why, but only the peace of mind and restfulness of heart that comes simply from knowing that we know and that is all that's required.

Chance meeting? Probably not, but maybe so. Toss enough coins into a fountain and eventually quarters and dimes and nickels will come into contact with quarters, dimes and nickels. But still, it's nice to think that those you know without knowing you know them will always find a way to find you...

Apparently, I've been lucky. I've never met an enemy from somewhen that I recognized absolutely, just friends.

Don't get me wrong, there are people I have known that I don't like when I meet them, and even some who have caused the hair on my arms to stand up, but never any I knew for sure were past enemies. In those cases, I don't know if it was recognition or the 6000 little pieces of information that one takes in unconsciously within the first nanoseconds of meeting someone.

A stranger I have seen, but one glance at his eyes, no longer a stranger. My imagination kicks in full force and I try to
imagine where I've seen him before. He now moves across the
room as our eyes have been glued to one another for several
minutes now. I reach for him, he reaches for me. A few
beautiful unspoken minutes takes the strange out of the stranger.

I've found that it's not only people that I recognize and/or share the kinship/enmity with but also places and animals. I once backpacked several weeks though the Rocky Mountain West with little more than a crude map drawn on a brown paper bag and yet nearly everything I saw was somehow familiar to me. It was amazing! In one particular instance a hail storm caught me in the open at 10,000 feet but I somehow "knew" about a cave (with firewood!) that was only another 1/4 mile in the direction I was traveling. In another case, I started up a small canyon in search of rosehips to supplement my diet and was immediately beset with a feeling of distinct and direct enmity, almost of hatred. It literally almost knocked me to my knees and I was starting to hyperventillate by the time I "got away" and out of the canyon. Talking with Basque sheepherder a few days later, I learned that the canyon I'd gone into had been the scene of a particulary fierce pitched battle between a group of Trappers and a party of Blackfoot Indians in the 1830's.

I've walked right up to wild animals that "no one can approach" and picked wild gooseberries within a stones throw of the den of a Mama Bobcat and her cubs and we enjoyed each other's company. And I've been set upon by "tame" critters that "never did that before!"

I've taken roads and trails, not shown on maps, that lead me directly to where I needed to go and I've become disoriented and almost lost while traveling down a straight, flat and well marked stretch of highway. I've had "mean dogs" lick my face and "gentle horses" kick the crap out of me as soon as I turned my back.

How can one recognize a place they've never seen or been to? How can entering a pretty little canyon suddenly fill one with terror and bloodlust?

Perhaps the most remarkable of all of this happened right here in East Tennessee: There's a little truck stop off I-75 at exit 117, North of Knoxville. I'd stopped there for years and for some reason always liked it even though it lacked in amenities and the food wasn't great and there wasn't really much room to park. For some reason, I just always felt drawn to stop there. It just somehow didn't feel quite as lonely as most other truck stops I'd been to, even though it was 1/3 of a continent away from my home on the high plains of Northwest Kansas.

A couple three years ago I stumbled across a fairly innocent looking (and FREE!) dating site called Connecting Singles. After being a member, in one capacity or another for about 10 months or so, I started communicating with an incredible woman from Anderson County, Tennessee. To shorten an already too long narrative, it didn't take us long to figure out that we were somehow meant to be together and I moved to East Tennessee in March of 2007 and we were married in August of that year...

...And I still stop at the little truck stop North of Knoxville. It's only 8 miles from where I type this.) But now when I stop there, my lovely wife drives out and picks me up and brings me HOME...

Kansan, you're "extra" senses are particularly open, and that's very cool. Mine aren't as open, though I continue to work on it, but I have felt a sense of comfort or of unease when going places. I can feel the spirits of a place if they're strong, or if I relax and open up. I don't doubt your experiences at all. I have yet to experience place recognition yet, though. But then, I haven't traveled to the places I've lived in previous lives either. I have a feeling I'll have it if I ever do.

I also have an affinity with animals. I haven't tried it against wild ones, but I don't tend to venture to their home territories, but I have had cats and horses that have never approached any stranger come right over to me.

Anyway, awesome post, Kansan. I enjoyed it.
