Depending on his ISP provider the delay can sometimes occur at the exchange due to upgrades or capacity .....it can also occur if he's using web mail externally from his hosted email application (laughing)

I've experienced that as well.........
I believe sometimes the server takes emails and delays sending them in batches as the "pipe" clears ..........
One suspects it's lost in cyber space somewhere out there , but in fact it's stored temporarily then sent out....

Yes, Unfortunately servers like outlook exchange and yahoo run batch processing, meaning they bundle signals (e-mails) into batches, and process them in those assigned batches. Since the assignments are completely random, and depending on the traffic, you may send out an email on one server (yahoo) and it gets sent immediately, whereas when its incoming into outlook, say, outlook bundles all the incoming information and processes it randomly as well. So, nine hours later, you finally draw the ace in the deck as the last card dealt.
