Ok I have a Gateway notebook and well it sucks not even a year old had to send it back once-reload windows 3 times since than...I am looking to buy another one anyone got any suggestions.
Needs: school stuff, a lot of internet work, fast processor, large memory, good graphics, good sound-OS doesn't matter as I will change it anyway to XP or maybe even 7- lightweight
I was looking at HP's (Tx2z)but was advised against HP-which makes me want it more of course..
Price I'm willing to pay $1,200 or less....
I have no idea about buying laptops obviously or I wouldn't have bought this one If you know anything about this stuff please let me know...thank you

I have a Dell XPS desktop that I use for gaming. I play Half Life 2 - Sims - Bioshock World of Warcraft - and any Tom Clancy game .
It's great for gaming, except it has a 2D shader so Initially I couldn't play some newer games. But I just upgraded it online and now I can play anything. IT's great
Dell has a bad reputation for outsourcing their tech support calls to India, but because of the backlash, they have new call centers in Indiana and Ohio now (I know because I called for my laptop recently). I love it
I was thinking of a Dell and by the time I load it-of course-it's around the same price as the HP.. I have heard good things about both and bad things about both...I have to have a laptop for school purposes and the fact that I hate sitting at a desk and working on stuff... thanks for you thoughts so far
francie81: BTW you say its a laptop you want I would recommend the Sony Vaio in that case, hope this helps.

I also would get their accidental damage for a year cux 2 year olds and laptops are a little bad combination
Hp's laptopsare ok.. if you remember when you have a problem to bypass their tech support completely..they also outsource to India, and their solution is always to reinstall windows.. when their are usually much less drastic alternatives.. I usually ask to be escalated straight to a case manager..

friends4now: I have firefox and tried linus-loved it but had to reload my computer with vista again and I agree on how much windows sucks-my problem is a MAC is completely different and I'm not sure I'll have time to learn it because of my class load
Well if you do alot of school work you definately need atleast 4GB memory with a nice processor to match it. I think the bottom line here is security, security, security good anti-spyware plus anti-virus software working along side eachother can't go wrong.
yeah i just have to find one-avg isnt bad but the best buy guy told me that the geek squad one they have is good-whatever he's biased i refuse norton anything and my downloading i have to have good protection. I would prefer to run firefox and linux i hate IE and well look above i agree windows is a pain
At your level of use, I don't think the Mac experience would be that different for you. But what you would find on the Mac is that the little things - the attention to detail - everything just works to make life easier for you. Maybe give it a try. Pop down to the Apple shop for a test drive.

I be sceptical of many free anti-virus porgrams, am using spybot & norton together although my technician disagrees with Norton as he claims it leaks viruses still but am only using it because of the free trial & I bought the full 12mths which I shall install when my trial is up. You might like to check out Avast Anti-Virus probably de best out there.
