Scubadiva: Okay, I'm stuck inside because I damaged a disk in my neck and I've got too much time on my hands on mandatory rest... so bear with me and my posts.
Anyway, there's a show on TV where a lady sells dog accessories to rich people. Some little flap to cover a small dog's back sells for the equiv of $ 80-100. There's more obscene, useless stuff for "Fluffy" at horrendous prices that these people go gaga over and are buying.
Then I flipped to another channel and there's a doc about people living in poverty, children covered in dirt and filth, without sanitation and worse, a young boy dying because there are no meds.
(Yeah, this is how I cracked the disk in the first place )
I don't really get the point...the woman's just capitalising on the stupidity of people with more money than sense...its a shame about the poor people but what does that have to do with the dog flaps? Should she give the proceeds to the poor to better their situation? (sounds like communism...) Or should the poor wear dog flaps perhaps? Or should the dogs buy flaps for the poor? Or?
It seems nuts but it only $80 and I dont think we want to have to think about every person in the world before make a purchase. Secondly there are people who spend what most of us make in one year on say a boat rental for 1 day...
It didn't just start in our life time. We just have more exposure to it. Was not the French revolution caused by a similar situation with Marie Antoinette where her people were starving and she was so unaware. You know let them eat cake...
Zeelander: Rude? you demonize people for what you refuse to do.... how do you know that they don't give and give a lot?
I asked you how you can say that I do as little as possible to ease my conscience. Care to answer that?
Now you go on to say that I refuse to do what they do. What do I refuse to do? The only thing I refuse to do is buy a $ 1000 bag to carry a dog in. Is that the problem? or have you not read the rest of the thread?
Maybe you don't know this: In Germany, giving to charity is virtually non-existent because the social system is such that people don't need charity like they do in the US. There are some private clubs and some individuals who have private causes that they collect for, but it is not a pervasive system like it is in the US. Therefore, it is more unlikely than not that people give to charity. They may, but the odds are slim.
Having said that, I would wager that the people on the show are more likely not giving anything to charity.

I was going to ask whether anyone remembers the story of Marie Antoinette. You beat me to it.
There are people who feel very strongly about the inequality and the increasing difference in wealth between the rich and the poor. This inequality is often the basis for desperate and at times deliberate actions by people who feel have been shortchanged by a system that allows this to happen.

What?? I do as little as possible to ease my conscience?
How would you know what I do? or how would you know the state of my conscience?
So far, you've been rude to me, accused me of reporting you, now you're making more assumptions... sounds like you're jealous of me.
