My dial up is too slow to see this site's fireworks, but it looks like the real thing is heading my way. I got the mandatory evacuation call at 2:30am, but I'm staying around to wet down the area, just in case the LaCanada fire actually reaches me. The winds are still blowing to the east, so it looks like it will miss me, but no one can predict changes in wind direction. The fire is 8 miles from my home. I love living out in the country, but there is always that fire danger hanging over our heads. I've had some small lightening strike fires closer, but I've never seen a fire this large this close. I'm packed and ready to go, if the winds change, but, hopefully, I won't have to. The fire is 5% contained. It has burned about 36,000 acres already. For those interested, here is a map of the fire:

Good luck and remain safe. We have threats of forest fires here as well and it's never a pretty sight.

Thank you for your well wishes. I'll keep safe. I constantly watch the smoke trail. There are quite a few homes between the fire and me, so I feel I am safe. Only 3 homes have been lost in the fire. I hope no more are lost.

Stay safe...that is more important than anything else.

I was in a fire this past April. It was a horrible experience. We had no warning and by the time the 11pm news was on, the fire was 20 miles away.

At 1am, I look out the window and see flying embers. Fire spreads so quick, 8 miles is not too far. Also, buffer zones can be jumped by fire...believe me....laugh

I appreciate your caring. I plan to stay safe. I've definitely been soaking everything around here. I think everything is pretty much waterlogged, including my dog. The fire is remaining southeast of me and slowly heading north east. I don't see any signs that the wind direction will change. It is interesting to watch the pyrocumulus clouds forming out of the smoke stream.

The fire did pass me by, though other homes were lost, and two fire fighters died in an accident while fighting the fire. Over 100,000 acres have burned so far and has cost $7.7 million so far to fight. They expect to gain control over it by September 8th.
