Maybe he doesn't really care about your personal life, but he knows that he wants to help you solve your 'issue' and get you back to being productive.

No, no need to tell your boss about your personal life, BUT when at work you need to give 100% to your job. Tbat is what you are being paid to do and not contimplate about a fight you had with your boyfriend. Do that on your own time and not your company time.

I've been stressed enough by outside situations in the past where I have realised that I probably should not be at work and need to be elsewhere sorting out whatever the problem is.
