Well, it has worked for me. It was difficult, and very stressful at times, but it has worked out better than I could possibly have imagined.

Its not an easy thing to do, and depending on the countries involved it can be expensive and complicated to relocate, but it really depends on your personal circumstances. I had no ties, as in children or property commitments and it was relatively easy for me. My partner had his own business and property, so it made sense for me to be the one to move.

I certainly think that giving it some thought is not wrong, and keeping one's opinions open is vital. Limiting oneself to a radius of say, 50 - 100 miles is somewhat restricting.

Anyway, just my story..

Its not a question of the heart ruling the head, TG. Sometimes, it makes sense in ALL respects to make the move.

A romance with someone 10 miles down the road is just as likely to end in failure than one with hundreds or even thousands of miles in between. In fact, the trust and commitment issues are tested FAR more in a LDR, so in a way the foundations for a strong, long lasting relationship are way stronger than in a local relationship, simply due to the logistics involved.

There are no guarantees in any relationship, so I just think its best to keep an open mind, and not limit yourself to any kind of restriction.thumbs up

IMO long distance just doesnt work.. sure there are stories which shows that it has worked with some people, but in the main, and from personal experience... it just dont work..:(

I think its as much hit and miss as any normal relationship, really. For some, it works, for some it dont - as you said. Think it depends on personal circumstances and commitments.

As I said before, it takes a bucket load of trust, and alot of patience. As far as Im concerend, Im very glad I stuck it out, because now Im happier than Ive ever been.

As regards TG's post, well, LDR are also about people who have met and for some reason cannot live together straight away. In those cases you already know if the chemistry is there.

As regards visas and things - yes, some countries can be complicated, but Ireland has the whole EU on the horizon, which require in the main no visas or changes of currency, and, I might add, a lot better climate!!laugh Just think maybe, if one is able to consider it, moving further afield would be good. Its also an adventure - nothing ventured, nothing gained!thumbs up

Personally, I think it depends on the circumstances and the individuals. If two people want to be together enough, they can come to some compromise and set a deadline but ultimately one of them has to move eventually or it will never work. I also think it depends also on how far of a distance. Moving to a different country can cause all sorts of problems like cultural difference, the person who moves can get homesick etc. I have have had long distance relationships before and they never worked because we wanted different things and couldn't come to a compromise.

Having said that, it can be done. It takes a lot of patience, trust and understanding though. Its just not for me......

I'm sure it can work for some people if, down the line, one is prepared to move lock stock and barrell. It's a hell of a risk though.

I personally would not be prepared to move to another country. I have too many commitments/family/work here. However if I felt a relationship was strong enough to go the distance I would consider moving to a different part of Ireland. Would have to be very very sure though and it would be after a long time with someone.
