. Throughout recorded human history (and likely beyond), arranged marriage was the norm in most cultures. I am struck by the similarity of dating sites to such primitive rituals. Have we really changed very much? Sure, we can now travel over the net to meet people anywhere on earth and communicate instantly but we might just as likely fall in love with the girl (or boy) next door given a bit of chemistry and a little time alone. . Putting aside for a moment the issue of women’s rights, why is the idea of arranged marriage so strange to ‘modern’ societies? Would you like a matchmaker to make you a match, catch you a catch and make all your dreams come true? . Check out my blog ‘Arranged Marriage’.

The idea of arranged marriages doesn't give people the free will to choose who may or may not compatible. That would be the same as finding yourself in a failing marriage and not being allowed to divorce. Thank God for no fault divorces, but even now it is becoming more difficult to obtain one of those. For me it has nothing to do with women's rights, but has everything to do with having the freedom to choose. I don't want to be trapped being with anyone.

I love Fiddler on the Roof! Even after all these years, it still raises wonderful questions :)
Arranged marriages are more outdated than typewriters and foot-operated sewing machines. If you're talking about some neolithic tribe in BFE, then my comment might not apply. Arranged marriages in our country and times insinuates indoctrination, and the ethical standards would have to subject themselves to law, but if someone tried to arrange my marriage they'd RUE THE DAY.
Randy109: quote=RobertC2]How about trial arranged marriages?Brilliant!![
I believe for every 20 or so TRIAL arranged marriages you can find at least one woman you are willing to shack up with for a year or so. Arranged TRIAL marriages are really cool!

You are from Utah? Don't some branches of Mormons practice arranged marriage?

I'm not sure, as there are some good cases for matchmakers. Then again, the opposite is true as well. So in the end, I'll just hang around my place playing on the xbox and watching bad late night tv
